Talk:gebären
DWB says that "im engl. bear, dän. bäre, schwed. bära ist, der ursprünglichen bedeutung tragen gemäsz, zugleich der begriff der schwangerschaft enthalten, in gebären nur der der eigentlichen geburt, jenes heiszt bei uns tragen." But this is not true. German "gebären" also includes or may include pregnancy. So, for example, when I say "Es ist eine bewundernswerte Leistung, vier Kinder zu gebären", I mean the entire process not just childbirth. Same with "zur Welt bringen", but different from "entbinden", which refers to labour only. But maybe DWB means that the German word never refers to pregnancy alone, which is true.
