Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle French geole, from Old French jaiole, from Late Latin caveola (later attested in Medieval Latin as gabiola), a diminutive of Latin cavea. The long vowel (indicated by the circumflex) is due to the elision of the first syllable.
