From Old Galician-Portuguese gualardon, cognate with Portuguese galardão, Spanish galardón; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wiþrą (against) + *launą (reward), literally ‘back-payment’:[1] compare Old French guerdon, Old High German widarlōn, Old English wiþerlēan.
