gúrkutíð
Appearance
Icelandic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From gúrka (“cucumber”) + tíð (“period, time”), a calque of Danish agurketid, from German Sauregurkenzeit (literally “sour cucumber time”). This refers to the time of summer when pickles were ripening and were put in a sour solution, and at the same time business hit a low and vacation and free time hit a new high. At that time there were few things to report on.
