From Proto-West Germanic *gaistijan, from Proto-Germanic *gaistijaną, related to *gaistaz (fear, terror). Cognate with Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐌲𐌰𐌹𐍃𐌾𐌰𐌽 (usgaisjan).
