[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *funsijan, from Proto-Germanic *funsijaną (“to make favourable, make ready”), from Proto-Indo-European *pent- (“to send forth, drive away, banish, rush, strive”), related to Old English fūs. Cognate with Old Saxon fūsian (“to incline, strive”), Old Norse fýsa (“to urge, compel, incite, provoke, exhort”).
