[edit]From Middle High German vunkeln, iterative of vunken (“to spark”), derived from the noun vunke, whence modern Funke(n) (“a spark”). By surface analysis, funken + -eln. Cognate with Dutch fonkelen, Middle Low German vunkeln (“to sparkle”).
