From Ottoman Turkish فندق (funduq, hazelnut) + -ici, from Persian فندق (fandoq), from Arabic فُنْدُق (funduq), from Middle Persian pndk', from Ancient Greek [κάρυον] Ποντικόν (Pontikón, Pontic nut), from the hazelnut's indigenousness and abundance in the area of Pontus. Compare funduc.
