[edit]From Old English fordwīnan; from Proto-Germanic *fra- (“for-”), *dwīnaną (“to disappear, dwindle”), from Proto-Indo-European *dgʷhey- (“to disappear, die”), equivalent to for- + dwynen. Cognate with Dutch verdwijnen (“to disappear, vanish”).
