Usage notes
[edit]- In the baseball sense, the simple past and past participle "flied out" are commonly used in order to avoid confusion with the other senses. For example, the sentence "Jones flew out to right field" could mean either that Jones hurried quickly to right field, or that Jones became out by hitting a fly ball to right field which was caught. On the other hand, "Jones flied out to right field" can only refer to a fly ball.
