Etymology

Via some other European language, ultimately from Ancient Greek φιλολογία (philología, love of argument or reasoning, love of learning and literature), from φίλος (phílos, loved, beloved, dear, friend) and λόγος (lógos, word; treaty; study of) with the suffix -ία (-ía) (Latvian -ija).
