[edit]from Middle French farder, from Old French farder (“to apply make-up, use cosmetics”), a borrowing from Frankish *farwidōn (“to dye, colour”), from Proto-Germanic *farwiþōną (“to colour”), from Proto-Germanic *farwō (“colour”), from Proto-Indo-European *perḱ- (“motley, coloured”). Cognate with Old High German farwjan (“to colour”), German Farbe f (“colour”), Sanskrit पृश्नि (pṛśni, “motley”), Welsh erch (“dark brown”), perhaps Latin pulcher (“beautiful”).
