From Proto-Germanic *faþō, *faþǭ (father's sister), from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (father). Akin to Old Frisian fethe (father's sister, aunt), Middle Low German vade (father's sister), Old English fæder (father).
