Etymology

From Middle High German vellic, vellec, from Old High German fellīg (staggering, dilapidated, inclined to fall, obliged to yield or pay), equivalent to Fall +‎ -ig. Cognate with Middle Low German vellich, Middle Dutch vellich, vallich.
