Etymology
[edit]From early modern Irish áinleóg, from Middle Irish áilleóc,[2] fainleóc[3] (compare Scottish Gaelic ainleag), a diminutive of Old Irish ainnel,[4] fannall,[5] from Proto-Celtic *wesnālā (“swallow”) (compare Welsh gwennol (“swallow, martin”), Cornish guennol, Breton gwenneli), from Proto-Celtic *wesrū (“spring”), from Proto-Indo-European *wósr̥ (“spring”). By surface analysis, fáinle + -óg.
