Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اول آخر (evvel āḫir),[1] from Arabic أَوَّل (ʔawwal) and آخِر (ʔāḵir),[2][3] equivalent to evvel (before, first) +‎ ahir (after, last). Cognates with Azerbaijani əvvəl-axır, Turkmen owal-ahyr.
