[edit]Unadapted borrowing from Portuguese escrópulo, from Latin scrūpulus (“scruple, nagging doubt, 1/24 uncia”), from scrūpus (“sharp stone, anxiety”) + -ulus (“-ule: forming diminutives”). Doublet of scruple and escrupulo.
