Middle of 16th century: via Late Latin, from Ancient Greek ἐπένθεσις (epénthesis), from ἐπεντίθημι (epentíthēmi, I insert), from ἐπί (epí) + ἐντίθημι (entíthēmi, I put in), from ἐν (en, in) + τίθημι (títhēmi, I put, place).
