[edit]From Middle High German entsezzen, from Old High German intsezzen. Equivalent to ent- + setzen, literally “to put out (of a state, condition)”, whence the two senses of to horrify (i.e. put out of tranquility) and to relieve (i.e. put out of a siege). Compare Dutch ontzetten.
