[edit]From a Vulgar Latin root *intortiliāre, from Latin tortilis (“twisted, coiled”). See also Old French entort as the past participle of entordre. Compare Catalan entortellar, Spanish entortijar, Italian intortigliare, Friulian intorteâ, cf. also Romanian întortochea.
