Etymology

From Old Swedish elds vadhe, equivalent to eld +‎ -s- +‎ våda (the -a at the end coming from the oblique cases of earlier våde). Originally in the sense "danger of fire". Cognate with Danish ildsvåde, Icelandic eldsváði.
