From Middle High German īnleiten, from Old High German inleiten, from Proto-West Germanic *inlaidijan, from Proto-Germanic *inlaidijaną. Equivalent to ein- +‎ leiten. Cognates include Dutch inleiden and English inlead.

Note that einläuten and einleiten have similar, but not identical meanings. Einleiten means a causal connection, einläuten a correlative one.
