[edit]Etymology
[edit]edus (“representation”) + kunta. Coined by Finnish folklorist and linguist Daniel Europaeus in 1853. The initial component edus is a noun that is no longer used independently to mean "representation" in modern Finnish; it has been replaced by the derivative edustus.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]eduskunta
- the Finnish Parliament
- (by extension, rare) any parliament
- Synonym: parlamentti
Usage notes
[edit]- As the names of institutions in general, eduskunta is always uncapitalized in Finnish.
- The parliaments of other countries may always be called parlamentti, but some of them are usually referred to with a term that is derived from their original language, see "synonyms" below.
