  1. (Indo-European linguistics) In Proto-Indo-European linguistics, an ablaut form of a root characterised by the presence of the */e/ phoneme.
    Synonym: full-grade
    Coordinate terms: o-grade, zero-grade, lengthened grade
    *bʰer- is the e-grade of the root meaning “to carry, bear”.
