From Old Swedish dyghþ (virtue), from Old Norse dygð, cognate with Norwegian dygd, Danish dyd, from Proto-Germanic *dugiþō, a variant of *dugunþō in English douth, German Tugend, Dutch deugd. These words are derived from the verb *duganą (to be useful), hence Swedish duga.
