driving trailer (plural driving trailers)

  1. (rail transport) An unpowered coach fitted with a driving cab and placed at one or both ends of a train.
    • 1954 November, “Trains for Southend Electrification”, in Railway Magazine, page 737:
      The motor coaches will have no driving compartments, and the end vehicles of every unit will be driving trailers.
