From Middle Welsh diskyn, from Proto-Brythonic *diskɨnnɨd (whence Breton disken), from Latin dēscendō (to go down), from dē- (down) + scandō (to climb).

Despite being written with a "y", the vowel here is generally pronounced /i/ in the north as tends to be the case when "y" follows "g".
