Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish دفع اولمق (defʿ olmaḳ),[1][2] from Arabic دَفْع (dafʕ), equivalent to def (an act of pushing away, repelling, expelling) +‎ olmak (to be, to become).[3]
