From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁-l-, from *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suckle, nurse). Cognate with Latvian dêle (leech), Ancient Greek θηλή (thēlḗ, breast, teat), Latin fēllō (to suck), Albanian dele (sheep, ewe).
