Etymology

Has been compared with Lithuanian dúoba (hollow, barn), Lithuanian dóbti (to smash, to hit), Latvian dâbt (to beat, to strike).

Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *děbati (to beat, to knock; to seek advantage) (whence dialectal Czech debati, Russian дябать (djabatʹ), Bulgarian дябам (djabam)).
