[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *deinas/*dinas (compare Proto-Slavic *dьnь), from Proto-Indo-European *déynos, ultimately from *dyew- (“to shine”). Baltic cognates include Aukštaitian Lithuanian and Latvian diena and Samogitian Lithuanian dėina.
