Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle French deterger.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /de.tɛʁ.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Homophones: détergé, détergée, détergées, détergés

Verb

[edit]

déterger

  1. (transitive) "(med.) to deterge; to absterge, to cleanse"[1]

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written déterge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
