French
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attested in Old French desrengier. By surface analysis, dé- + ranger.
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /de.ʁɑ̃.ʒe/
Audio: (file) - Rhymes: -e
- Homophones: dérangé, dérangeai, dérangée, dérangées, dérangés, dérangez
Verb
[edit]déranger
- to bother; to disrupt
- Si cela ne vous dérange pas, fermez la porte.
- If you don't mind, close the door.
- to disarray/disarrange (throw into disorder)
Conjugation
[edit]This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written dérange- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
