Inherited from Middle French debatre, from Old French debatre. Equivalent to dé- +‎ battre.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /de.batʁ/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

débattre

  1. to negotiate
  2. (intransitive) to discuss, debate [with de or sur ‘about something’]
  3. (reflexive) to struggle

Conjugation

[edit]

This verb is conjugated like battre. That means it is conjugated like vendre, perdre, etc. (sometimes called the regular -re verbs), except that instead of *débatt and *débatts, it has the forms débat and débats. This is strictly a spelling change; pronunciation-wise, the verb is conjugated exactly like vendre.
