From Middle Welsh kyfreieu (“leashes”), from Proto-Brythonic *kuβ̃ruɨɣ (compare Breton kevre (“link”), Cornish kevren (“bond, link”)), from Proto-Celtic *komrēgom (“bond, binding”), prefixed deverbative of *rigeti (“to bind”) (compare Old Irish con·rig), from Proto-Indo-European *Hreyǵ- (“stretch tight, bind”).
