[edit]From Vulgar Latin *circus bibit, literally, ‘ring that drinks’ (from bibere "to drink"), late variant of arcus bibit ‘rainbow’ (also cras pluit); compare Franco-Provençal arcboit, arboè, Ladin arcobuàn, Campanian arcovevere.[1]
