Possibly derived from an Occitan/Norman stratum (compare Old French pere), ultimately from Late Latin compater, compatrem, from Latin cum + pater. Cognate with Catalan compare, French compère, Italian compare, Neapolitan cumpà. See parrinu for a similar morphology.
