Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic колѧда (kolęda), from Proto-Slavic *kolęda, itself from Latin kalendae, calendae. The Latin word probably left a lost or unattested Romanian word *cărinde (compare related word cărindar), which influenced or became crossed with the Slavic-derived version to make the variant form corindă.
