[edit]From Middle Welsh kerddet, from Proto-Celtic *kerdeti (compare Cornish kerdhes, Breton kerzhet), from Proto-Indo-European *kerd- (compare Old English hratian (“to rush, hasten”), Ancient Greek κραδάω (kradáō, “to swing, brandish”), Sanskrit कूर्दति (kūrdati, “(s/he) leaps”)).
