From Middle Welsh kerddet, from Proto-Celtic *kerdeti (compare Cornish kerdhes, Breton kerzhet), from Proto-Indo-European *kerd- (compare Old English hratian (to rush, hasten), Ancient Greek κραδάω (kradáō, to swing, brandish), Sanskrit कूर्दति (kūrdati, (s/he) leaps)).
