cephalosome (plural cephalosomes)

  1. (zoology) The anterior region or head of insects and other arthropods; the anterior of the cephalothorax.
    • 1877, Alpheus Spring Packard, A Monograph of the Phyllopod Crustacea of North America:
we would suggest that the head of Arthropoda be termed the Cephalosome
    • 1918, John Tait, “Experiments and Observations on Crustacea”, in Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, volume 37, page 280:
Curiously enough, when the oral appendages are removed from the cephalosome, the articular foramina for the mandibles appear to be directly continuous with the row of articular foramina for the peræopods and gnathopods.
