[edit]From carro. A Tuscan adaptation of carrossa, with northern Italian assibilation of earlier carroccia, a derivative of carro with the suffix -occia, -occio (cf. -uccia, -uccio). Possibly also from Latin carruca (compare French charrue) through a Vulgar Latin intermediate *carrucea or *carrucia. Compare Sicilian carrozza, Friulian caroce, cf. also Romanian căruță.
