Etymology

From Proto-Celtic *kalyāwo- (“stone”), either from a local Celtic substrate or a borrowing from Old French or Old Occitan. Compare French caillou. Celtic cognates include Irish gallán (“standing stone”) and Gaulish *gallos, the source of Old French gal (“small pebble”).
