Latin
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Misspelling of Classical Latin calcārius (“pertaining to lime”), from calx (“limestone, lime, chalk”) + -ārius. The spelling with -eus could have been influenced by the distinct suffix -eus, or it could simply be a result of the homophony of -ius and -eus in some pronunciation styles.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (Classical Latin) IPA(key): /kalˈkaː.re.us/, [käɫ̪ˈkäːreʊs̠]
- (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): /kalˈka.re.us/, [kälˈkäːreus]
Adjective
[edit]calcāreus (feminine calcārea, neuter calcāreum); first/second-declension adjective
Usage notes
[edit]- Used almost exclusively as a taxonomic epithet and thus not normally in inflected forms other than the nominative singular.
Declension
[edit]First/second-declension adjective.
