From Ottoman Turkish, from Arabic قَاضِي العَسْكَر (qāḍī l-ʕaskar, “military judge”): قَاضٍ (qāḍin, “judge”) + عَسْكَر (ʕaskar, “troops”), because his jurisdiction originally extended to military cases.
