From Proto-Celtic *kēros, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃i-, extension of *(s)ḱeh₃- (grey, dark). Further cognates are Old Novgorodian хѣрь (xěrĭ, gray cloth) and Old English hār (grey-haired).
