Possibly from Hokkien 麻糍 (môa-chî) or a similar cognate, or Spanish buche (mouthful). Compare Tagalog butse (Jian dui), Tagalog matse (Mache), Cebuano masi (Masi), Kapampangan motsi (Moche).
