From Malay burung unta, a compound of burung (bird) +‎ unta (camel). Compare Hindi शुतुरमुर्ग़ (śuturmurġ, ostrich, literally camel fowl), Persian شترمرغ (šotormorğ, ostrich, literally camel fowl), Turkish deve kuşu (ostrich, literally camel bird).
