Uncertain. From Old Galician and Portuguese buraco (13th century), perhaps from Latin forāmen (aperture, opening) or rather from a local derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (to pierce) + the suffix -aco, from a pre-Latin suffix -akko-.
