Etymology

Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic болꙗринъ (boljarinŭ, boyar), Serbo-Croatian boljar (boyar) and Bulgarian боляр (boljar, boyar). Ultimately from Bulgar.[1][2] The adjective, a derivate of buj, was likely influenced by the Slavic word.
