[edit]Inherited from Middle French bievre, from Old French bievre (“beaver”), from Latin beber, of Germanic or Celtic origin, both from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰrus (“beaver”). Akin to Old High German bibar (German Biber (“beaver”)), Middle Dutch bēver (Dutch bever (“beaver”)), Old English befer (“beaver”), Old East Slavic бо́бръ (bóbrŭ). More at beaver.
